Through the making, seeing deeply inside the world and talking together about what is in the world many answers, insights and new directions are discovered by this process. I often see AHA MOMENTS …completely new insights…and that is the true individual creativity in action in this process.
WHAT IS SANDTRAY/SANDPLAY?
- It is a place to find answers and/or work out
solutions
- It is a place of healing, discovery and wonder
- It is a place where it is safe to be real
- It is place of your own unique creation
- It is often playful and fun
WHO MAKES A SANDTRAY?
- Adults, Children, Adolescents, Families,
Couples
HOW DO YOU MAKE A SANDTRAY/SANDPLAY SCENE?
- Select from a collection of miniature figurines, houses, trees etc.
- Arrange them in a tray filled with sand, using as many or few as you wish.
- You can add water, landscaping materials-houses, fences, trees, bridges etc.
- No two sand worlds are ever alike.
WHAT INSTRUCTIONS ARE GIVEN?
- Adult tray. Sometimes you may want to get a particular answer to a question. Then I might say…What is next in your life? Or How do I get there from here? Or What tools do I need on my journey? What’s in my way? The questions are endless and always unique to your needs.
- Child’s tray. I might ask: Show me your family/What do you like to do together? Show me your worries. Show me what you like and don’t like. Again the questions are endless and unique to the child’s needs.
- Adult or Child. A tray is often created without any instruction at all. Completely spontaneous and using the person’s inside creativity. Then we see what shows up and wonder together.
THEN WHAT COMES AFTER THE SAND WORLD IS COMPLETED?
- The child or adult takes time to look at their world. Really looking at what is in the tray.
- Then we talk together about what is in the world. And use what I call the I Wonder questions… What is in your world? Anything new-unexpected-curious? Are there any answers to the question you asked? Does it show a direction or action that can be taken? (this is just a short sampling of possible questions to explore what can be in the world)
- Children…I ask more specific questions like…Who is this character? What is he or she doing? Where are they going? Do they need anything on their journey? (again just a short list of many possible questions to explore).
